Where do air quality forecasts come from?
Air quality forecasts are produced by state and local air quality agencies and are publicly and freely available on the Environmental Protection Agency’s AIRNow web site (www.airnow.gov). STI distributes these air quality forecasts through AirUpdate as a service and is not responsible for forecast accuracy.
When are forecasts updated?
Each air quality agency submits Air Quality Index forecasts at different times throughout the day. Air quality forecasts are generally updated between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. local time.
What is the Air Quality Index?
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a standardized scale for reporting daily air quality. It classifies how clean or polluted your outdoor air is, and what associated health effects might be of concern. The AQI focuses on health effects someone may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. The U.S. EPA calculates the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution (also known as particulate matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. For each of these pollutants, EPA has established national air quality standards to protect public health. For more information, visit www.epa.gov/airnow/aqi.html.
Where do I find more information on air quality?
You can learn more about air quality at AIRNow (www.airnow.gov) or from your local air quality agency. To find your local air quality agency, click on your state at www.epa.gov/airnow/where.
